Let me even begin to explain it this way: There are many expenses incurred in the industry that the consumer is unaware of.
First, lets discuss the cost of education. It is now anywhere from $10,000-15,000 or more to attend school.
Then there's the cost of licensing......every 1-2 years we renew our licenses. Plus my business license which in renewed every 6 months.
How about the cost of leasing our station? My first $200 each and EVERY week goes back to my salon owner to rent my space.
Then there's the cost of doing business and buying supplies. I spend an additional $200 each week on color, perms, hairspray. etc. Heck, last week I spent $78 total to have my shears sharpened. Oh, did I mention that the shears themselves were $450 and $950 respecfully?
How about the fact that since I'm self employeed I pay an additional 15% off the top in "Self Employment" taxes.
Oh, yeah and since I'm self employed, I don't get benefits so I also pay $200 a month for health insurance.
Man...I don't have any retirement or 401K either....UUUhhh...since I'm self employed so I have to give my investment broker money each month to save for me to retire on.
Lets NOT EVEN get into my medical bills from my neck, back and hands being ruined from my work.
hey...contact dermatitis anyone? How about Reactive Airway Disease from breathing in the chemicals all the time?
Gee......please, please folks, the next time you wonder why it's so expensive to get your hair done.....remember these few little tid bits of info!

Most have to pay rent of their space, all the products they use, the straight irons, combs, brushes, cleaning solutions etc. They also spend hours working our your hair (except for a haircut) The last 2 trips to the salon cost $107 & $100.

It's just like anything else, you want a service, you have to pay for it. Just like a hospital charges for every little thing, so do stylists and salons. It's their livelihood and they have to make money just like everyone else. There are a lot of salons out there and you just have to find the one that fits your budget.

because customers differ in what they want weather its just cut & go or if they want it dryed before leaving...etc. so the prices are already broken down . Just like buying a outfit the whole thing may cost 200.00 but if you dident need the blouse w/ith itthen you wouldent want to have to payfor it anyway

A friend of mine actually goes to beauty schools. They work under a teacher and I imagine get graded on their performance. The rates are great!

I agree. I suggest that you call in advance and get their prices. I searched a lot til I found a reasonable one in our area and I am quite happy with the results.

Probably because they do a great job. I both mad and happy when i walk in the beauty shop. I'm happy because i know my hair is now going to look at least nicer, and made because of the big wad of money that i have to pay. (well actully my mom does! :)
