I have a 10 month old Labrador that keeps on digging holes in my yard. It keeps on digging on 2 to 3 specific spots. I've tried everything and it keeps going back to dig. So now I keep it locked up most of the time in a kennel. Is there a way to discipline this dog so it will stop destroying my yard?

first of all, labs are a very active breed of dog. They are also one of the smartest breeds. This means that they are like children, they will easily get bored and need more mental and physical stimulation. If you only get to spend an hour or less with your dog every day, then you have the wrong breed of dog. This dog will not entertain itself easily. You can do two things. You can either get your dog a companion, or you can designate more time to spend with your dog during each day. A lab will need at least two or more hours a day of attention, this means walking, jogging, swimming, or playing catch. They are very physical dogs.

what do you call a kennel? a kennel is a penned area, usually outside with shelter. it is not a crate. if you have a kennel in your yard, can it be moved to any or all of the spots the dog enjoys?
have you tried to allow the dog to dig in one area? this type of dog needs to dig more than many other breeds and you would do well to encourage it to dig in one area only or to kennel it in an area which is large enough and accessible to a digging spot.
the dog certainly doesn't need to destroy your yard; it is possible to train it to recognise acceptable and unacceptable digging areas, just as it's possible to train it to use one area only to eliminate waste. keeping it locked up most of the time in a kennel is just a reflection of your frustration. it is fair to be frustrated, but you're the master here, if you don't know how to train the dog, get a few good books, take some obedience courses, etc. do what it takes to learn how to talk to your pal in a way he'll understand; he really just wants to please you,you know. please stop leaving him kennelled except when absolutely necessary (because you can't supervise him) it will take some effort and a bit of time, but within a month you'll have a great and happy dog.

Dogs dig when they're bored. Crating the dog a majority of the time is cruel. Would you like to be locked in a closet for hours every day? Play with the dog more, give it treats for good behavior, give more toys, a Kong toy with peanut butter is a great toy!
It couldn't hurt to try.

Chances are that you will not!! I had a mixture of lab/pit and that candy as a substitute enormous puppy dug up the entire backyard at distinctive levels of his lengthy existence. We on no account did quit him from digging and our vet mentioned that labs like digging and gambling, it is only of their nature. I recognise that does not make you consider any higher than it did us. However, we did take a look at a combo of pink and black pepper and it did deter him fairly round in which we and the pals had rose timber developing. He adored the rose timber too and ate them at an alarming price. I changed greater than I care to confess. He additionally ate an whole porch swing in at some point. All that used to be left used to be the hardware that went with it. My retired pals mentioned he had a ball doing it. I didn't uncover it a laugh. He used to be some thing else!!! His title used to be "B.A." for noticeable explanations. Good success and be blissful he's handiest digging.

Please do not discipline your lab. It is not his fault. You need to give him something to do. He is bored, and you are blaming him. Labs are large dogs that were bred for a purpose, not just as a backyard family dog. That is cruel for him. Take him for some runs and romps at the dog park and let him play to his heart's content. Please do not blame your dog. You probably should have researched the breed and what breed would have fit your life better before springing for a labrador. They are retrievers, after all.

digging is typically a sign of boredom
your dog needs more mental stimulation - Obedience lessons will help
a good game of catch (labs are bred to catch and retrieve)
keeping it locked in a kennel IS NOT what your dog needs... unless you can meet his mental requirements I suggest getting rid of the dog

every time you see the dog doing it drop something loud and it should scare the dog which might bring it to stop. But some dogs do not
