OMG my daughter has done that countless times, that and butt paste its a mess. The only thing that works is dawn dish soap, follow with a conditioner so the hair won't tangle when its brushed. Usually 1 or 2 washings with it will get it out. We tried every shampoo in the house, hand soap etc and its the only thing that works

Dawn is what they use on animals during oil slicks too, so its safe, just dont get it into her eyes

My two year old daughter did this last night. We actually had a Dr's appt today, and I've come up with a combo that may help, first wash once with lemon juice, then follow up with a wash with dawn, followed by a clarifying shampoo. My daughter has very fine hair and had a very large tub of vaseline.

I washed Vaseline out of my baby's hair with dawn soap. I did the Vaseline intentionally and my granny told me to slather it on( i was hesitant) to get the cradle cap out his hair and scalp it worked great BTW....Lol...just a little dawn goes a long way. first wipe of excess with paper towel then do the washing. I know its been a day almost but for those who may be looking for answers on how to was oily stuff out of kids hair,Dawn is magic. If you find that you just dont have enough time r patience to repeat as necessary u can go to sally beauty and buy shampoo made for waxed hair styles(in the crazy hair section) a friend of mine tipped me on that one too.

It will take several washes to get it all out. Use a baby wipe to wipe the excess before washing. Also take a comb through his/her hair. It may gather some of it. Good Luck
