we just got a cocker spaniel puppy and we don't know how to train her to not poop in the house! Anything that works will be great!

I'm going though the same thing right now. we just got a pug that is 8 weeks and the breeder let her poop and pee wherever she wanted. our first dog was so easy to train but she is impossible. we put her in a crate when not home and when shes sleeping (keep the door open when your home so she wont hate her crate) and gave her just enough room to move. put a blanket and a toy to keep your pup company. they will not pee and poop where they sleep. put a puppy training pad (looks like a flat diaper you would see on a hospital bed) down near the door you want her/him to go to. when she/he wakes up and every 30 or so minutes of playing walk her/him to it so she/he knows where it is and knows how to get there. she/he will eventually know where to go. then once that is accomplished start bringing her/him outside. if she/he makes a mistake show her/him and then bring her/him to the puppy pad. after she pees and poops we give her a little treat to reinforce good behavior. good luck!!!

Crate training. Without question the most effective way to housebreak your dog is to crate train it. There are dozens of books and trainers that will give you more information, but the basics are this:

Eating or drinking stimulates the puppy's need to go.
The puppy will not soil its own sleeping place.
Consistent praise or punishment will imprint in the puppy's mind what is appropriate or inappropriate behavior.
Don't forget that the dog's mom also praises an corrects the puppy, using "dog language," i.e. a growl or the mom using her mouth to pin the puppy from the neck, or licks and squeaks for encouragement or praise.

To crate train, initially when the dog is alone at home, when you're sleeping, or when you can't watch the dog, put her in the crate. When she is let out of the crate, she goes straight outside- you should watch and praise her when she goes. Right after eating, she goes outside and goes and gets praise. If in either instance she doesn't go, she goes back in the crate for 15 minutes. Then go outside again, repeating the cycle until she goes. It should only take a few repetitions of this cycle until you don't have to watch her outside- leave her out for a few minutes, then let her in.

When she's inside, she MUST be watched. If she goes, a firm "NO" is given, pick her up by the scruff of his neck and put her outside. If she gets away with peeing or pooping in the house, she doesn't learn. There's a balance between prevention (letting her out so she doesn't even have the urge when inside) and correction (you don't want to punish her a dozen times, but a couple of corrections aren't bad because it gives her guidance as to what is proper behavior).

most dogs need to go immediately after eating so as soon as your dog finishes eating, take her outside. if she has an accident in the house, tell her "no" and put her outside for a few minutes. she'll soon get the hang of it. good luck.

When we got our dog we first trained him to go in a doggie litter box. They sell them at pet stores and you fill them with a product called Second Nature which is made by Purina. Later he learned to go out side.

Shock therapy. Apply a collar that you can control remotely, everytime the dog wishes to poop on the floor shock him. You might get creative and place a shocking device on your dogs anal sphincter and see what happens. I would be cautious with that however. When he goes outside, remove the device so that he can go. When he can go shock free, he will realize that its ok to poop outside.

pick puppy up by hair on neck and *** and rub his nose in it then pick the poop up with the pups mouth and scold it while you throw it outside it sounds crude but you'll only have to do it a few times

rub his face in his little pile of accident, smack his nose with a rolled up newspaper, and toss him outside, dogs arent stupid, they will get the idea quickly.
