If the child is old enough to speak, than he/she is most definitely old enough to understand the word no. Your reactions to the child's behavior is the child's test for you. Just to see what they are allowed to get away with. It is a very hard and draining job, but being persistent will let them know who is in charge. By the age three both of my daughters(now ages 14 and 16) knew that they were not going to get everything they wanted, when they wanted it.
Don't be afraid to leave a full shopping cart at the grocery store, or leave the mall before you had planned etc. Temper tantrums, I feel should be addressed immediately. NEVER reward the tantrum, but reward the good behavior.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

yelling obscenities isnt ever appropriate and if a kid is doing that then you know the parents are in trouble becuase a kid doesnt learn obsenities on their own.. they learn it from watching somebody - probably the parents.. so this is a parenting problem...
as for the other things crying is acceptable for longer and to disallow kids to cry is unfair...problem is with boys particularly the parents dont allow them to cry but allow them to be angry in other ways.. makeing for very messed up adults...
punching throwing and slapping are NEVER appropriate.. at any age
yelling is typical until the age of 3.. but the problem is if the parent gives in to any of these negative behaviors EVEN ONCE then they have trained the kid to behave this way in the future
so... I am saying while some temper tantrums are typicall they are really never appropriate.. and should NEVER be reinforced...

I have two kids and it's never ok, the reason is.... you don't want them to get into the habit of thinking it's acceptable. Doing so will instill that behavior in them which you may never get out. So consistency is the key. So it's never acceptable. Physical or emotional abuse from a kid is subject to a bigger punishment than just trantruming over not wanting to do something.

crying doesn't define a temper tantrum, put together they define a temper tantrum. Children have temper tantrums. After 10 I think you should learn to deal with your anger better. Grown men and women who have the described temper tantrums are people to stay away from.

omg! there's an age limit? oops.
seriously..."temper-tantrums" are really inappropriate at any age...generally ignoring the child's tantrum works most of the time--when they realize they will not get "attention" or what they want by throwing themselves on the floor and screaming--they will stop.

"Inappropriate" is a fluid concept. There's 70 year-olds who throw temper tantrums.
It depends on the person's personality and their genes. I don't think people are like that all their life, though. It can be a phase of a few years. Eventually they meet their match and it makes them doubt it as an effective thing to do.

It is never appropriate to have a temper tantrum. My daughter tried that in a grocery store, and I flipped the script on her. I asked her if she loved me. (she was about 2 yrs old) I aked her if she wanted me to go jail? She said no. I said that if she continued to act like that, I would have to hit her ...... well, I said beat her ***...and they would take me to jail, and she would go to a foster home. I never had her throw a temper tantrum on me in public...or private for that matter ever again!

We have been sitting around the table having a family contributors supper. whilst swiftly my father grabbed his serviette and started to whip his serviette back and forth on the back of his neck in this kind of a shoe shiner....at a similar time as uttering epithets that would make a sailor blush... we theory he had lost his innovations, yet seems my mom had positioned too lots horseradish in the sauce! lol
