My mother was diagnosed at 57 as well and died when whe was 66 after aspiration pneumonia. I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers older than me and a physician told me I could be tested for it in a hospital in Massachusetts. If you can only imagine, our entire family wonders if there is some genetic brain disorder going on here. 57 yrs old is very young to get Alzheimers twice in 1 family. I have been thinking about testing so I dont invest a bunch of money in a 403B then not be able to get it before I die.

Although genetics do play a large part in our general pre-disposition to various health problems, taking good care of both your emotional and physical well-being can in most cases surmount that dilemma. Getting tested for a genetic problem is always advisable because it gives you an opportunity to catch it early and do something about it before it happens.

Get tested if it will help you deal with the apparently very real possibility that you may develop this disease, but bear a couple of important things in mind: Firstly, Alzheimer's is typically only bad for the patient at the very beginning, because of the feelings of confusion. Once it becomes more serious, the patient is often only mildly bothered, or happy & oblivious, and the pain & suffering is all on the part of the remaining family members.

Secondly, it would be far worse for you if you neglect to fund your 403b, don't develop any disease, and live to be 120!

Save like you are going to live to be 120, but live every day like you only have six months left. The future is almost impossible to predict, but you can be confident something unexpected and unplanned for will be along in a minute.

In the early stages of Alzheimer's, a member of my wife's family who had not seen her in a long time looked at her with a big smile, and announced "Well. You look just like yourself!"

Go take the test. You might also contact the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. I believe they have some recognized expert in the field. Perhaps they can consult on your case.
