You can do a direct bank to bank transfer, sending anything like cash through the post is a really really bad idea.
My friend's son is at Edinburgh university and they send him money from New Hampshire by transfering directly from their bank to his. I think they are with Bank of America and he is with either Bank of Scotland or Royal Bank of Scotland. Ask your bank.
Re-reading the question, if you want an instant answer to her hunger you can order on-line from Tesco and they will deliver the food direct to her. Faster than sending money and she doesn't need to leave the house.

The American dollar is crap.. when changing it into British pounds! Either way... Walmart has 'Western Union' and they do 'Money grams'.. its actually reasonable in cost to send money back and forth. If you send 50 US Dollars to England, its only worth like 25 in Pounds.
Banks, are becoming more and more harder to change currency.
Wiring money, is the fastest and cheapest way to go.

Actually I've found that Paypal is the way to go. It's better than transferring currency at the bank (because the rates do kill you), you're only charged one small fee for each deposit.

the yankee dollar is crap.. at the same time as replacing it into British pounds! both way... Walmart has 'Western Union' and they do 'money grams'.. its absolutely lifelike in value to deliver money again and forth. in case you deliver 50 US funds to England, its purely worth like 25 in pounds. Banks, have grow to be further and further more durable to regulate overseas money. Wiring money, is the fastest and most inexpensive thanks to flow.
