OK, I really want a puppy, but my parents won't let me have one. I say all the time I'll take care of it, but they don't believe me, and they say it's too much work for them. How am I going to convince them??

Everyone else hit on good points of proving your responsible enough to take on the task of caring for a pet.

But... (yes there is a "but" and I understand you might not want to hear it, however it is important that you do)

Unless you are old enough to work and earn the money it will take to care for a pet, the pet WILL be part of your parents responsibility. This includes more than just food. A dog will need dishes, collars, brushes, leashes, toys, and very importantly...vetrinary care. This also includes getting the dog to and from the vet's office. Unless you have your own car and can drive, someone will have to take you and/or the dog where it needs to go.

A paper route, babysitting, or part time job at a fast food joint might earn you enough money to buy food and some other items for the dog but what if (God forbid!) the pooch gets sick or hurt? Will your parents have to cover the cost of the medical care? And even if all goes well and the dog is and continues to stay in good health, it will at least need vacinations and routine check-ups. Those things cost money. Sometimes it's expensive, too. Often times the cost of the vet visit alone can be more than the actual treatment or vaccination.

Your parents will be legally held responsible for any animal living in their house if you are under the "legal age" (which I believe is 18 but could be 21 in some places). This means that if you can't buy the pet's food or get it medical attention when it needs it, your parents will have to do so or they can face the risk of being arrested for animal cruelty or neglect charges.

Also, what will happen to the pet if you decide to go away to college after high school? Most campuses will not allow you to keep pets in the dorms or on campus. Will your parents be stuck dealing with the pet while you're away? Will you be willing to sell it or give it up for adoption if they do not want to keep the pet for you? And if so, do you understand that not everyone who promises a "good home" will actually provide one for your pet and that many animals that are surrendered to humane societies and animal shelters must be put to sleep, even if they are healthy and/or of good temperment, just because of overcrowding issues?

Owning a pet (any pet) is a big responsibility. It is not something to take lightly or to decide on a whim. Our pets depend on us to be their caregivers as well as their friends. Please make sure that you are 100% ready to own a pet before buying or adopting one.

if there is something else in your life that you promise you do that you don't alway fulfil, like a musical instrument, you promise that you will practice but you never actually do. Show them that you do take care of your responsibilities and start practising more, it'll show them that you would be able to take care of the dog. Another thing would be to maybe look after a neighbours or friends dog for a couple of weeks, take it for walks and look after it if your friend was on holiday etc ... not promising anything though, your parents may just really not want a dog! and dogs are a lot of hard work!!! you have to take them for a walk everysingle day even the tiny ones!

I suggest you demonstrate some acts of responsibility. These could be cleaning your room assisting with meals and taking the trash outs. Preforming jobs without being told to do so is a great way to show your parents that you have the self motivation to assume care of an animal. Work is love made visible as stated by Gibran

You might not be able to convince them because we are having the same argument in my house. My kids and I would like to have a dog, but knowing the responsibilities that come with it, it has become a hard decision to make. Mainly because I know that it will all fall on me. I have 2 teens, but I cant' even get them to clean their rooms let alone take care of a dog.

Walk them. Feed them. Groom them. Immunize them. Vet bills when the are sick, and the list goes on. I have to agree with your parents on this one. Sorry.

Talk your parents into a pet that wont take as much care. Maybe a turtle its needs careing and its not easy but its good to do. That way when they see you can take care of that pet they will consider to let you have a puppy.
Good luck!

Everyone begs mom and dad for a dog and guess who ends up taking care of it? even after all those promises. dogs are a LOT of work. You live around their schedule. that means they need to eat the same time every day and go outside the same time every day. Not well I have a date so he can wait till midnight. Sorry, as the owner of 2 dogs I have to agree with mom and dad.

Prove yourself in other ways like helping around the house without being asked. Prove to them you are capable. Do you do chores without having to be nagged? Is your room clean? Do you help with dishes and cleaning around the house? Do you do any of this without fighting or being bugged? What about your homework?

Dont make a deal with them just do it and they might be impressed enough to let you have a puppy.

make a big diorama and show them all the facts you need to know about dogs. Act more responsible by doing more chores or helping around the house. They might just give in
