Usually reflux and heartburn go hand in hand. Its the acid coming out of the stomach into the oesopagus that causes the pain of "heartburn" (which of course has NOTHING to do with the heart).

Some people have reflux without experiencing heartburn pain.
However, the acid is still potentially damaging the esophagus and should be treated by a doc.

It's still reflux. Without pain though, the sufferer usually doesn't realize what is going on. My doctor figured it out when I told him I thought I had a hair in my throat ...but the hair had been there 2 weeks, so I thought it was more like a hairball!
