My 5-year-old's birthday was yesterday, and for his party, we had chocolate cupcakes with bright red and bright green frosting. He had one at the party.

Then I didn't realize that my 3-year-old took the leftovers into his closet, so during naptime he "ate" (and smeared on the walls and rubbed in his hair) probably six cupcakes with that bright red or bright green frosting.

This morning, he's feeling fine, but he's got black poo. How worried should I be that it's internal bleeding of some kind, or is it probably just the bright red food dye going through his system?

I didn't mention that I have stomach ulcers, and a year ago landed in the ER needing to be admitted for blood transfusions and surgery after taking excedrin and then having blackish red stools. I'm super-sensitive to black/red stools. I know I was pale and eventually passing/blacking out for a day or so before going in, and he's running around playing with his toys, acting like he's still got all that sugar coursing through his veins, so that's kind of why I'm on here instead of having him in the ER.

Unless there was some kind of concern about his stools prior to this cupcake incident and unless your son had had some abdominal injury prior to the cupcake incident,I would suspect that your are correct in asuming that the cupcakes were the culprit.
Generally speaking stool that is as black as you are speaking of that might possibly contain blood would more than likely have a very distinct smell to it and it's consistency would be more tacky
(medical profession usually will call this type of stool "tar" stool because of it's tackiness and smell).
If son is not displaying any other symptoms, just watch him and notice his stools after a meal or two and I'll betcha it is going to return to it's normal state.

This is a VERY GOOD question.

When you eat oreos, or chocolate cupcakes, the poop will be as dark as night. Because; your body does not digest those things.

Now, let's say your son, you, your husband, etc. did NOT eat anything like oreos or chocolate cupcakes, and the poo is dark, this is a sign that something is wrong inside of you. The darker it is, the more serious it is (remember, did someone eat oreos the night before?, this does not count!).

Dark poo, or worse, any blood in the water - get an appointment to see a doctor immediately.

Black feces could be as simple as high iron in the blood. The food coloring could be the culprit too. However, if it were internal upper GI bleeding, he would be feverish and cramped up...it would be pretty obvious something isn't right gastronomically speaking. Just keep an eye on it for the next couple of BM he makes.

It's probably nothing but after today if it continues, I would have his stool checked for blood.
One thing you can be sure of, if it is blood, then it's old blood because of the black color. Keep checking his bowel movements for the color. It should probably clear up.

Get an over the counter stool blood test at the drug store. Those dies should not give a black stool.
