I like and use both film and digital. I do find that I use digital more often, but sometimes (weddings and special shoots) I use film as well.
I am a photo lab manager, so I see lots of consumer pictures. I do believe that it is harder for the average person to get a good print from a digital point & shoot camera than it was from a comparable film camera. A lot of this difficulty is caused by not reading the manual and understanding the settings. Also, digital has less latitude than film, and often the highlights are blown. Add to that, most p&s digicams have dismal performance at higher ISO. Also, I see that people do not delete the bad snaps from their card. For whatever reason many, many folks just keep the blurry, out of focus, heads chopped off, etc, images hanging on.
Everyone will probably have to switch to digital eventually. Film processing is getting scarcer. The film itself costs more and is not readily available in the variety and amount of just a few months ago. In my own lab, our film selection has dwindled from a 6 foot section (no disposable cameras) down to a 3 foot section (which includes the disposables!) As a guesstimate, maybe 50% of the film we process now is from disposable cameras. Six years ago, we ran 80 -100 rolls per day and 0 digital. Now we average 30 rolls per day, and do well over 10,000 digital prints per month. So the times they are a changin'.
Enjoy your photography, whether you use film or digital!

Good question.
I have a Nikon FG which is a film slr camera and I use it for my photography class. I think the quality of the pictures is more artistic and real with film. You spend more time thinking about the shot you want to take because you know it will cost you money. On the other hand, I don't like spending money on developing and waiting for the prints. It's very annoying and most of the time, I don't get what I want. It costs too much. That's why I'm purchasing...
a Nikon d50 which is a dslr. I think digital is way easier because you can see what kind of photos you have taken on the screen and you can easily upload them to your computer. It's faster and easier.
In conclusion, I prefer digital over film.

I like my digital because I can edit the photo before sending out to print and I don't miss the developing and printing costs.

I also like the creativity that I get with a 35mm camera.

I understand the new digital SLR models are the best of both worlds. If only the price would come down a little.

Digital: The pictures don't cost half as much to process and take. You can take 360 pictures if you have a good sized memory card and you can pick and choose which ones of those get printed. Also you can easily store them on CD and save them forever. The quality of the color pictures is sometimes better then with film. But maake sure your using a camera with at least 5.1 mega pixles or higher or else the quality will be bad. I think 7 mega pixles is pretty good.

Film: I use my film SLR for black and white pictures only. I feel the digital printing of black and white does not come out as crisp or clear as what comes out of a dark room. It's expensive though unless your buying flim in bulk. You have to buy film, and then your not going to get off 300+ pictures and you have to pay to develop the film and then develop the pictures. It can be more expensive but with Black and white It's the best.

I think this comes down to what you want to do with the pictures. I was a hold out for film for a long time because you just couldn't get good prints from digital. Digital was fine though if you wanted to view your pics on a computer. Things have changed a lot and prints from a 6mp or higher camera are comparable to film and chemical prints. If you need to go to huge enlargements such as movie posters and such , then film is the only way to go for now.

I use both but i prefer Digital because you know right there if the picture turned out or not. I've ended up wasting a lot of money on film pictures that didn't come out right. Also, you don't have to keep buying more film...its already on a resuable camera card.

I'm guessing you mean digital verses film? With digital you get immediate viewing, can print only the pictures you want, no film cost (take as many pictures as you want, and delete the ones you don't like). Film camera, you get to spend lot's of time in a darkroom, messing with chemicals that are probably carcinogens, but you get a pat on the back for being "old school"! I bought my first 1.2 MPX camera in 1996, and never looked back!

Once you have a decent printer and learn how to use some image editting software, you will find you can produce prints as nice as those you do in the darkroom. Once you get over the hump of the initial investment, you will also realize that you're done spending money. No more film, chemicals or processing fees. You are able to take all the pictures you want FOR FREE and this is the right way to learn photography.

I prefer digital because I can change the ISO settings from picture to picture. That way I can take a nonflash picture at 1600 ISO then the next picture with a flash at 80 ISO. It's not realistic to just switch like that with film.

I prefer digital camera because it is easier. You can pick the best pictures that you want and can take as many as you want until you have the right one.
