I used to work for Praxair Services of which one of many services they do is pipeline leak detection. Their main method of detecting leaks is to pump a tracer gas into the pipeline. This tracer gas readily goes into the soil and air so it's easy to detect outside in the ground. With this method, you can detect very small leaks of 1 gallon per day. This leak detection services is also good for strorage tanks.

The "air pressure" check is very unreliable since changes in atmospheric pressure and gas expansion due to temperature will give you inconclusive readings on your air pressure gauge.
