Christianity was an odd Judaic sect to start with. The Old Testament is a history of the Jews - the New Testament is the story of how Christianity started. Pontius Pilate wasn't in the army. God exists or she doesn't, depending on the individual believer.

If you study the history of the bible you quickly understand the it has everything to do with Rome and little to do with God or Jesus.
