It depends on what country you are getting your passport from. But for the US it states 6-8 weeks. I filed mine in May, before the summer, and received my passport in 4 weeks. It really depends on when you file. Give yourself at least 2 months when getting a passport. Make sure when you go to the post office you have everything. You will need to pay two fees. One for processing for the Post Office and one for the government for the passport. The government will accept credit cards but PO does not. So bring a check or you can buy a money order from the PO or your bank. Bring your two pictures 2x2 (if you have digital camera and can print pictures, that's the cheapest way), ID, any expired passports, check or money order, and the filled out form.
Check the times and days the post office will be open for passports. Get there before they open. There will most likely be a line and it takes a while because half the people aren't ready with the paper work and what not.
The price depends on a renewal or a new passport. If renewing you really just have to mail the form with additional paperwork. It's the easiest way. Check on the website that the above person gave you. If you get the forms from the post office, it'll explain everything for you.

If you have your picture taken at the post office or other passport filing location, your total cost is around $115.
It took 7 weeks for my wife's and mine to arrive.

it depends which country you are talking here...
some countries have better facilities that only take a day to process a new passport...
and some others could take weeks...
but wouldn't more than a month!
