You should always do it face to face. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if he just called you and said its over. Its just not right, it hurts more.
Your better off going to his place to let him down. After he gets the news he wont be in any shape to drive. Keep eye contact, don't be too smiley. You can try to hold his hand; friendly. Just tell him that things just don't feel right with you and you think its time for a break. There's things that you want to do in life, things you need to figure out.
