This is especially common in hunting breeds, because as somebody else mentioned, it is likely it will get ripped off while the dog is running through the brush. It will probably hurt more and be at more of a risk of infection if it's ripped off in brush or you're not around to take the dog to the vet.

Dew claws serve no purpose, but can cause alot of problems if they get hung up and torn.

Some people believe that (some) breeders leave the dew on for fighting purposes. You'll be able to tell a well bred pup from a pup that was born under someone's shed very easily.... look for the dew claws.

They catch on things and then need to be removed anyway, and would hurt the animal worse. Especially for a big, outdoors dog.

Because they are *****RESPONSIBLE***** breeders!!!!
So the VESTIGIAL (USELESS!!!!) dews don't snag, rip, catch on things & HURT the dog.

There are a VERY few breeds that the STANDARD requires that dews be left on!
