In our area, the carpets are the norm and the mats are a VERY nice surprise. Mats are SO MUCH MORE sanitary and avoid the smell of dirty feet that the other places have.

My intent is not to offend anyone, this is an honest question. While I love martial arts and I find ALL forms of beautiful, I have to state for a fact that I have actually had get up leave places because they smell so bad!

What is up with that?

I've never heard of training on carpets. It sounds very unsanitary and just gross. I have only trained on hardwood and tatami mats and they both have their merits.

Carpet is a lot cheaper than hard wood or mats! Mats contrary to your belief can actually be very unsanitary! If they aren't cleaned consistently and properly there is potential for all types of infections like ring worm and staph!

I prefer carpet or hardwood. Mats are too soft making balance more difficult.
