If you do not normally have back problems the others who answered are probably correct. However your sleep position can cause pain too, for instance if you sleep on your stomach it can put strain on your back. I have chronic back pain due to hip problems I find that sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees helps to keep everything alligned.

If a new mattress or mattress pad doesn't help I would talk to my doctor as you may have a medical condition you are unaware of. Also instead of rushing right out and purchasing a new mattress I would try buying one of those foam pads for the top of your current mattress sometimes a plain old foam egg crate can help. The best are the new memory foam toppers they cost a little more but are well worth it. Good Luck to You.

chances are its your bed, you might want to invest in a mattress that supports the spine and neck better, or it could be as simple a a pillow to fluffy or too flat, if you wake up this way it most likely has something to do with sleep. If it is getting worse and symptoms continue after trying those simple things seek a doctor
