Goto www.annualcreditreport.com. The first thing you need to do is find out where you stand. You said you've paid some things off...well if they are still showing a balance on your credit report (aka: cr) then you can dispute all those items directly with the credit bureaus. You can do that from the above website. You need to look at all three bureaus and dispute all derogatory items with all three. The bureaus are obligated by law to investigate and the creditors have 30 days to repsond whether or not you owe them. Print a copy of each report. Look for things you still owe, your cr will contain contact information for every creditor on your report. next step is to contact creditors you still owe and negotiate a settlement. I would recommend starting with 30% of the balance shown on the cr. If an item has been in collections at least 6 mos. they are more willing to negatiate a settlement. DO NOT send them any money without a written payment agreement or settlement agreement. Do your correspondance with cerified mail. After all that go to www.myfico.com and read about ways to build credit...you first need to stop the bleeding. Hope this helps!

Even though you have had credit issues in the past, just paying off your will help with your scores. Make sure you don’t close any accounts that are in good standing.
Make all your payments on time, never use over 50% of you credit limit.
Another way you can try is get on someone’s (a GOOD friend or relative) department store or gas card account as a card user only (you won’t be responsible for there debt). Be sure this person has good credit and make all payments on time, if they don’t this will work against you.
Every month when the credit is reported you will receive the benefit of your friends good payment history. That in turn will raise your credit scores and make new credit more available to you.

once you have paid things off, the bad reports, being late with payments etc, do remain on your credit report, i believe for 7 years,,,,,,
if you have any credit accounts left, make sure to catch them up then pay on time,,,,,
if you dont, you can open just one account, at a store or credit card, and make sure to pay it on time
most local areas/cities have a free comsumer counseling/credit counseling center, you might make an appointment there, and let them go over your credit report with you, and come up with ideas
mainly time, and staying current with all bills, is what will eventualy fix your report

Called my creditors, made payment arrangements, got some lowered...but you gotta talk to them..they want your money, they don't want you in jail for non-payment....I did it 13 years ago...credit rating is in the 700's now!!!
