Border terriers are pretty good, my parents have one and they have hardly any hair on their carpets, unlike me who has a labrador which is the hairiest creature on the planet but totally worth it! There aren't many though. You could get a Chinese Crested as they don't have any hair at all!

The main dogs that don't malt are poodles and any other breed that needs to be clipped rather than shedding ie lasa apso, yorkshire terriers, wire haired terriers, old english sheepdogs etc, also very short haired dogs don't tend to malt much either especially if you keep on top of the grooming which I always recommend you do outside in the yard especially if anyone in your household has allergies. I recommend you go onto the Kennel Club website for some advice and a good source of info is the PC CD ROM "The Multimedia Guide to Dogs" they have a vast database of info on every breed imaginable at your disposal.

All dogs malt, my ridgeback has short hair and it is more difficult removing her hair than the german-shepards hair. You will have to get one of those hairless Mexican dogs, urrrgghh, sorry but they look awful or stay without one. I vacuum my house once a day and it does not smell. I use bicarbonate of soda mix in a couple of drops of rose-oil or lavender oil, shake and mix well and in the evening i scatter some all over my carpet and then vacuum it in the morning. I have to tell you that short-haired dogs sticks into everything whereas long-haired dogs hair sit ontop of carpet and is easy to remove, hard work but easier. Then another thing is when it rains, we have to take our dogs for walks with the results is they get wet, the german-shepard gets very wet under his tummy so i have a huge supply of old towels for them to be dried with as well as a towel by the back-door . Hard work as long as you let your kids know that the dog is not solely your responsibility and they will also be responsible for cleaning up . Or you will end up like me doing everything for the dogs even though i never wanted dogs in the first place but i love them so much now.Good luck:)))

Being a groomer, I can tell you that ALL dogs DO shed.
There are some breeds that do not shed as much:
Poodle, ShihTzu, Lhasa Apso, Yorkie, Silky, Schnauzer, Bichon, to name a few.
But, since these breeds do not shed as much as say a Lab would, they require daily combing and monthly grooming visits.
Dachshunds, Italian Greyhounds, and Whippets are a couple of smooth haired breeds that do not shed a whole lot..but still, they do shed.
The only breed that is guaranteed to not shed at all, is a hairless breed.

The term is MOULT and dogs who grow hair as against fur are the ones which do not shed. Most of these are long haired and need regular grooming and clipping. Even short haired terriers etc shed short hairs all the time

Usually, that's too long for me. I think it depends on the guy and his face though. Certain guys may pull off long hair and other folks can't.
