I'm looking for a basic digital camera that isn’t prohibitively expensive that will take color or even just B/W pics. I want to use it to take pictures of my home while I am away so it would have to have the capability to either take pictures at user set intervals or at least regular preset intervals. The picture quality doesn’t have to be outstanding, just good enough to show the basic activity going on in the shot. Also, it needs to be low profile so as to be hidden if possible. It does not have to transmit, but rather just store the images for later retrieval.

I was looking online for such a camera and under the search criteria I put in, I came up with the Sony Cybershot DSC-S500. Anyone know if this camera has the above stated features? Thanks!

Yeah the sony DSC-500 will not do what your looking for. You can set a timer for a 10 second delay but that is it.
You'll want to go to a security store and ask them what you can get. but you probably will have to pay a heafty price for a security camera. Also you probably won't find anything that takes pictures at desired times. You'll probably have to get a video camera. Also I don't know how long you plan on being away but you'll have to figure out how to change tapes. Maybe they have a video hard drive camera but those can take 7-10 hours and thats it.

good luck

What you are looking for is not currently available in a still shot camera. They make video cameras that you hook up to your computer that you can view via the internet. Most camera or electronics stores sell these that include the software you will need. Try doing a search on Home surveillance.

My Canon Powershot G6 has an intervalometer. It can be set to fire up to 87 shots at whatever interval you choose. I have never used that feature, but the camera is capable.
The G6 is a discontinued model. I have had mine about 2 years (and I love it!) but you might be able to find a refurb or markdown one on eBay or a camera store.
