How do you get your saint? Back in the old days when there were a milion Catholic saints then whatever saint's day your birthday was would be your personal patron saint. Is this what you mean?

First, you have to be Catholic.
Next, you have to have lived a life of exemplary piety and goodness...mostly people who were religious (monks, nuns, priests) but not always.
Then, you have to be dead. I mean, they wait until you're dead to start the process. They examine your life, works, morals, writings if any, etc.
Most of the time they require at least 3 miracles either during your lifetime or after your death, by way of people praying for your intercession.
There's quite a long process, rather like a trial investigation. First you are declared "blessed," then "venerable", then finally some reach canonization, aka sainthood.

If you're talking about choosing a saint's name for confirmation etc., choose a saint you admire or whose teachings etc. have had an effect on your life. I'm not catholic but if I were I would choose St. Therese of Lisieux. She rocks!
