Self-fulfilling prophecy is a psychological term that suggests, for example, that if you tell a person over and over again that they are stupid, they will in fact fail to achieve. The corollary would also hold, that telling someone they were smart improves their chances for achievement. This has been applied to the impact of racism, women's limited involvement in scientific careers, internalized homophobia, and the United States expansion into its western territories (it was said to be our "manifest destiny").

Don't confuse self fulfilling prophecy with the general use of "Prophecy"
Self fullfilling prophecy is when one believes something to be true about themself from what others have said and then act in such a way that what was said becomes true.
Also you should not assume that a prophecy is a "prediction"
To Prophecy means to simply speak forth. So a Prophecy about some future event is not a prediction of the event but merely what has been spoken forth in its regard.

If I say :Oh, I just know I'm going to fail that test! Or, I know I'm not going to get that job! We are, just in our negative thinking subconsciously sabotaging ourselves. If we go about things with a negative attitude we usually get negative results. If we have confidence and maintain a positive outlook, I'm not saying we always get what we want, but at least we have more motivation to carry out the necessary steps involved in getting where we want to be. As they say "I think, therefore I am."
