Both of us have a rotten cold, so I was hoping for something comforting which we could actually taste. I would be grateful for any ideas.

Put whole chicken into cooking pot, add celery, carrots and onions in large chunks (just wash, no need to remove peels) add salt, pepper and whole garlic head, bring to a boil then simmer for several hours while you doze on couch watching tv. With large fork or tongs, remove chicken and strain soup thru sieve. Cut chicken into portions, place in bowls, add broth and eat with crusty french bread. Very satisfying! Hope you feel better soon! Cheers.

Vegetable Soup with Toast Sticks!!!

For the soup:

1 lb. stew meat
1 small bag of frozen vegetables (has green beans, green peas, onions, corn, etc.)
1 cup V-8 or vegetable juice
1 can diced tomatoes, NOT drained
salt and pepper
water to cover
oil

In a large pot, heat a little oil. Add meat and brown. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer. These measurements are flexible, so just do it to taste. I like mine really tomato-ey, so I use a little more vegetable juice.

For the toast sticks - simply butter some bread and toast..........and then cut them into sticks about 1 inch wide!

Hope you feel better soon!

Mashed potato is always comforting and will warm you up. Maybe have some chicken cooked in garlic with it - you should be able to taste that.

Hope you both feel better soon xx

Cheese on toast always comforts me when I don't feel so good, and instead of butter or marg, spread tomato puree on the toast, and then melt the cheese under the grill.
