It's all in your abs, knees and thighs.

Because TKD kicks are chambered you have to bring the leg up before you extend. A fast kick needs strong abs to bring the whole leg up quickly (your leg is a huge percentage of your total weight) and then extend. Check before or during the workout part of your training you're doing sit ups along with your stretches or leg raises.

A good excercise to try is with a partner. One person stands in front of you, and they have two small focus pads in each hand. They are held out horizontal pressed together, about chest height. Without warning he will open his hands to create a space between the pads about a foot and a half wide. You must front leg side kick between the pads as quick as you can. If you miss or touch the pads, 5 push ups. Have 5 attempts, then do the push ups you need then try it with the other leg. Try have him move the pads around, left, right up and down to get your accuracy as well as your speed.

Best of luck in the tournament, speed is the biggest factor in tournaments, especially point stop which the lower levels do.

Drills...speed drills...more drills.
Also, you can try wearing weights (like used in aerobics classes) around your ankles while practicing or doing drills. The added weight will strengthen your legs - and once you get used to performing your kicks up to speed with the weights on, they will feel really, really light and strong when you take them off. This takes time, though!

You might want to train your reflexes too which I personally feel is very important. Do lots of stretching. Running could help your leg power and endurance as well.

Lots and lots of practice....which if you are a member of the ATA, you will not get unless you keep dishing them out LOADS of cash!

Money aside, practice is your best bet....remember, taekwondo (and all forms of karate) is you against you and NOT you against others.

Take your time, you'll get there!

Train in the water, doing everything as you normally would. Believe it or not, you will increase your speed. Good luck!
