A friend of mine has a 7 and 1/2 year old male Staffie who has a growth on the back of one of his hind legs. It's been there all year. When I myself first noticed it it was about the size of a small pea and my friend said it had been there a while, but now it's as wide as a £1 coin and twice as high. It looks nasty, but it's not bleeding or weeping and the dog isn't bothered about it. I keep nagging my friend to take him to the vets and she says it's at the top of her list of things to do, but she's been saying that for months. I've decided to give her until the end of the month then I'll report her to the RSPCA. I'll keep reminding her to take the dog to the vet, but if she doesn't I can't see what else I can do for the dog. Would it be wrong for me to report my friend? Or should I have done it sooner?

She also has a 20 year old cat that had been unwell for a very long time but she kept putting off taking it to the vet because she didn't want to have her put down. Anyway, one day recently her young grandson accidentally sat on the cat and a massive absess burst, since then the cat has been fine. It must have suffered horrendously for a long time, and if she'd been to a vet she could have been sorted in no time at all. I'm starting the think my friend needs a bloody good slap.

The more I think about it the more I realise how unsuitable she is as a pet owner. Her dog gets out of the garden all the time, he's been run over twice, although he didn't suffer too badly. Her old cat has a recurring flea allergy that she doesn't get treatment for, and her other cat once had a nasty bite (from another cat or a fox maybe) which she didn't get treatment for. I'd hate her to lose her pets, but really, she's just a bad owner now that I think about it.

I've just done an online report on the RSPCA website. I haven't given my friends address but they have my details and if they want my friends details I'll pass them on. I hope I'm doing the right thing.

i work with the ASPCA, REPORT IT NOW! why wait? if it IS a cancerous tumor you letting your friend continue to neglect her dog is NOT helping the dog at all. you can remain anonymous if you don't feel you can confront your friend head on about it.
no harm in anonymity if the dog gets the help it needs.
just be aware that if someone IS called in, she will probably loose the dog as a pet, and will have to sign him/her over to the RSPCA.
which quite honestly would probably be the best thing for the dog anyway.
if she won't take him/her for that...your friend probably doesn't put the dogs needs in her mind much, and she might continue to neglect the dog to the point of it's own demise!

I know this person is your friend and I don't want to sound rude, but sorry she really doesn't deserve to have animals in her charge, how cruel is she that a lump on her dogs leg is just part of her 'things to do list', god forbid its anything serious and that poor dog is suffering because of it, OK it might just be a fatty tissue cyst but its kinder and easier to get the dog checked out to be on the safe side than it is for the poor thing to suffer, it could get snagged on something to and then it will bleed and be sore and probably even become infected too, sorry but I wouldn't credit her with waiting until the end of the month to report her, I would do it asap and let her suffer the consequences for been cruel.

I just had to put down my 7 1/2 year old rottie due to bone cancer. She was my best friend. Get your friend to get it to the vet. the longer it goes unchecked the more it will cost to remove it. Not to mention the loss of a dog that could have been prevented.

i would take the dog to the vets myself and then give the friend the bill to pay, she shouldn't have pets if she cannot look after them properly, you are very right to be concerned for the dogs health.

added:
you have done the right thing in asking for help via the rspca for your friend, you are obviously very disressed for the welfare of these animals. weldone you hope all works out :)

Yes call the animal shelter and report her, she shouldn't have animals if she isn't gonna take care of them. If the dog has had a growth on his leg this long and she hasn't done anything yet she won't and the dog just might be suffering...DO IT NOW!!!!!

I just had to send one of my dogs to dogie heaven because of skin cancer and he was in awful pain...

It sounds to me he has a growth of something on his leg a sist or tumor this is very bad anyone who lets any animal stay that way shouldnt be having a pet. everyday people hurt their pets without realizing their doing it, she shouldnt have let it go on this long it can be very dangerous to him and if it pops or gets bigger he could have serious effects to him like death. because as it grows its using his blood to grow dont let him suffer anymore please call RSPCA right away.
