While most of the classic bars that made NYC famous are gone,(CBGB, HELL, etc.) There are few cool unknowns. Try, Whiskey Ward (goth, country, punk, dive bar), Kush (Moroccan style hookah lounge), Delancy Lounge (A little bit of a college croud but a fun time), Back Room (Old referbished prohibition peak easy with hidden entrance).
In December, Rolf's is a must. The whole place is cluttered with Christmas lights and decorations from hell. One drink is enough here just to check it out.
Bars come and go in NYC frequently. Pick up a Time Out Magazine or Zagat's and look for one that's your style.

Try Brass Monkey down in the meat packing district or McSoreley's if you want to experience a bit of history. If you're just down for watching football and eating some of the best wings you've ever had, try Bar Coastal in the upper east side.

To be honest,, we went last new year & it seemed to be mainley eating places, dont think they have the same drinking culture as UK.
There was a couple of bars though on Times Square that looked busy.
What a great place..........Enjoy & Have a good day !!!
