zah brought up all of the good points regarding which unit for you to pick, but I'll just add my experience.

Generally, I like the Garmin units. They tend to have the best user interface. The exception is the fishfinder unit he has by Lowrance- I like their fishfinders a lot and although I haven't seen any of the Garmin GPS/Fishfinders in a while, Lowrance would be my choice.

The first thing to do is figure out your primary use, then decide if you want a smaller handheld unit, or a larger one for your car, or something in between. I have an eTrex Legend for hiking, and a Navigator II (Streetpilot) that is for the motorcycle and car.

Sir:

I don't know what usage you plan to make of the
GPS Unit and therefor have some difficulty in
recommending a specific unit to you. For example:
Are you going to install it in a Boat, or a Car?
Are you going to carry it in your pocket while
on a mountain climbing or hiking trip? How is your
vision - can you see and make use of very small
screens? Or, do you have vision problems and need
large numerals and letters (screen size information)?

For my own usage I have two GPS units. One is made
by Garmin, the other is made by Lowrance. I like the
Garmin for portable use, and the Lowrance is installed
on my boat where it is used along with a built in fish
finder (depth sounder) feature. The specific model
that you choose will depend upon your cash budget
and your usage requirements. My portable Garmin
unit was around $120 US, and my GPS/Fish Finder
was just over $1000 US on sale.

GPS units are similar to cell phones in that they need
power and you must plan for that need with extra
batteries, or a plug type charger/power supply. I was
most upset that Garmin did not supply rechargeable
batteries with the new GPS, but later found out that
none of the suppliers do that.

Within the last few years, many GPS units have
incorporated maps with their displays, and these can
be most helpful. For boating and hiking use, they
will eliminate the need for a raft of paper maps which
can get wet and become unuseable/ruined. However,
the screen size situation comes into play again.
A large screen size unit is not handy for portable use,
and often not battery powered - needs an auto or
boat power system for continuous use. So keep that
in mind as you check out the various units that are
available today.

In case you are an avid fisherman, please take note...
Certain GPSMAP devices contain minimal map
features at the basic price, and detailed map chips
cost $200 extra. Some provide a chip specific to
your area of operation with purchase of a new unit.
Other chips to extend the mapping display coverage
cost $200 extra. There is a limit as to the zoom in
detail of information provided on those chips, and
you must work with what they give you. In most
cases that level of information is quite sufficient.

Your GPS antenna must have a clean - unobstructed view of the sky. Operation inside a house, boat, or
other enclosure requires an external antenna and
cable.

A side benefit of GPS usage is the provision of accurate time and date, along with elevation above a certain
point under the earth. After a few uses you will discover the magic number to subtract or add to that measurement to get true elevation - if you are a mountain climber, etc.

Many paper maps do not have Long. Lat. scales along
the side of the map to permit you to correlate the GPS
information to actual locations. So you will need a few
local marine or aircraft maps of your area to use with
your GPS if you do not purchase one with the MAP features.

Hope you have fun with GPS.
Regards,
Zah

GPS for motorcycles are costly with the aid of desiring to be water-resistant. automobile structures do not so are extra much less costly. We use a automobile/pedestrian unit it is detachable from the mounting cradle that suits it to the automobile. We slip it right into a see by using water-resistant digicam pouch and take a seat it in the acceptable of the tank bag the place we are able to work out the reveal screen. we don't have get admission to to the audible classes this way yet can see the seen instructions. fortuitously it is undemanding to tug over on a motorcycle and verify what you're doing. i think of it is available to get such instruments with bluetooth, then you certainly will have a bluetooth receiver on your helmet and get the audible classes that way. No thought of the fee although, could desire to be extra much less costly than a committed motorcycle unit or it may desire to not. Our automobile unit became into decrease priced so we are pleased with it is barriers on the motorcycle.....it does what we choose it to do. the two way we merely ever purchase Garmin.....we've 3 in entire, one automobile fastened....the only i've got defined it is detachable and a rock mountaineering unit. we've continually got here across Garmin map bases to be the main sturdy.....the thoughts you learn human beings making use of off cliffs following a sat nav are worth making an allowance for. once you climb, your GPS desires to be attentive to the place you're.
