Many people follow the media hype surrounding GHD's. They were one of the first major offerings in the U.K market and their straighteners are extremely good. However, they are not without their faults. BBC Watchdog featured an electrical problem that caused GHD's to continue to heat up (fire risk) even when the switch was off. This mostly affected older models, but the company refused to acknowledge the flaw and put the public at risk!
The main things to look for when buying a hair straightener are:
1) Ceramic coated or solid ceramic plates which allow the plates to glide through hair. Ceramic coatings do eventually wear off, but this does not affect the performance too much.
2) Ceramic heating element which allows a hair iron to heat up in a matter of seconds. Cheaper irons can take up to 90 seconds.
3) Variable heat control. High heat straighteners can damage hair if used too frequently. Sometimes you can achieve the same results on a lower heat setting. Also, always use a heat protection product like Trendline Heat Protection Gel.
Both the Hair Tools FHI Ionic and Caprice hair straighteners are excellent and very popular. The Caprice straightener is only £24.99 and the Daily Mail gave them 10/10 in a review.
GA.MA also have a straightener that heats up to 220 degrees.

RE:
How hot do GHD straighteners Get?
I want to buy a new pair of hair straighteners but i am wary of spending a fortune on a pair of GHD's. Surely if i can find a pair of straighteners that get as hot as GHD they would be just as good?

a ghd will get to 210 degrees but it is not about the heat. I have a pair of cheapo's that get to 210 as well. GHD have a heat system within the straightners, and the actuall tongs are glazed with something special. That is why they are pricey and work well. If you often straighten you r hair it is worth the investment!

210 degrees. Babyliss do a pro 230 straightener that as it says goes as hot as 230 degrees which is good if like me your hair is thick and wavy as ghd's did nothing for my hair. Also make sure whatever straighteners you get use protection spray!
