After you have finished your meal wiped your hands and mouth.
Fold your napkin neatly and place it beside the plate.

You don't screw it up and put it on the plate, its considered rude.
Just like you don't cross your knife and fork on the plate it is considered rude or that you didnt like the meal.

Cloth or other? Most people wipe their face with it, ball it up and throw it on the empty plate. In a resteraunt, the balled up napkin on the plate indicates you are done with the meal, such as if you have to use the restroom, you would place your napkin to the side of the plate folded. This keeps the busboys from bussing your table when you are not done.

I keep it on my lap until everyone is done and the check has been paid. I put it on the table where the plate was (assuming the plate has been taken away; if not, I place it besides the plate) before standing to leave. This way, you show respect for those who are still eating and you don't leave your stained napkin for all of them to see, until the last minute before leaving.

If you are leaving the table but you'll be back, put it on your chair.
If you are completely done and won't be coming back to the table, put the napkin on the table (next to your plate is fine).

In your lap until everyone is done eating. If it's paper leave if folded on the plate. If it is cloth fold and lay next to the plate or a cloth one can be laid on your chair when leaving.

If it's a cloth napkin, just lay it beside your plate.

If it's paper, I guess I'd put it on my plate.

If it's paper, scrunch and plate it, cloth, try to fold it so the crud is on the inward fold and place BESIDE the plate. or if you dine at the same spot on a regular basis and you have a matching dinner-set at home, shove it in your pocket and collect a set!!!!!

After wiping your face if you need to, put it on the empty plate. It signals that you're done with the meal.
