I believe that it can. Not in all cases of course, but all too often. For example, Christians take pride in calling themselves "sheep" (followers, with God as their shepard)... takes a lot of responsibility off the individual, don't ya think? If you're just following a God who "cannot" be wrong, and believe that God hates homosexuals, you don't have to think about them as people, with feelings, etc. You just hate them too. Other religious extremists have suicide bombers, who think it glorifies them to kill themselves for their cause. Pretty lemming-like, wouldn't you say?

I agree.

Organized religion encompasses all the different branches of Christianity. I'm not aware of any other religions that fit the "organized" title.

The Bible mentions on countless occasions that homosexuality is evil, sinful, etc. It is never once considered good or even merely acceptable. So I fail to understand why anyone who is homosexual would want to be a part of a religion that believes them to be an abomination.

As far as organized religion in general, yes I have seen on many occasions where followers are hypocritical and hateful. Then again, Paul in the New Testament wasn't any more kind. He was very prejudiced. Organized religion uses scare tactics to draw its followers in which they then use on others to draw them in as well. It's very easy for alot of people, especially those who are powerhungry and don't care about anything else regardless of what they may say, to become hateful toward others who refuse to agree with their beliefs.

Agree --

We become 'hateful lemmings' who do nothing but follow what somebody else says without really thinking about it, or applying the knowledge to our own souls. Christians will dispise Wiccans as "devil worshipers" when this is silly, and untrue. I've noticed that every religion is worshiping the same God, those that worship something darker, however... are not (Lucifarians, for example...). If you were to step back and LEARN about other peoples religions, and actively seek out the correct answer, you will realize that there is no one right answer, for we all come from very different back grounds, and perspectives --

4 Men stand at the base of a mountain. One at North, one at South, one at East and one at West. Each have a radio and a compass. Each man asks the radio which direction should they go to get to the top of the mountain... and they all get one single answer -- Up.

I strongly agree with his statement. You only have to look at some of the hateful answers in this R&S section to prove that.

They are hateful lemmings and its not just against homosexuals, its against anyone who looks different, thinks differently, and doesn't follow their cult.

Some of the answers on here claim that there are religious people who are able to think for themselves, but what crap. They are all following their individual books (bible, qu'ran and all that crap) word for word and following just like lemmings without questioning these ancient, outdated, hateful, hypocritical and prejudiced books.

In regards to homosexuality in the bible, a lot of you quote the King James version of the bible, who (if I'm not mistaken) was a raving homo himself. Wheres the logic?! You have none because religion is so hypocritical.

It wouldn't surprise me if some religious type tries to report me for my response, even though we are supposed to have freedom of speech, but I don't care. The sooner religion is banned, the quicker we can live on a more peaceful, non-prejudiced, loving world.

Why has it suddenly become 'ok' for people to blast religion but saying anything that's even slightly against homosexuality is a major no-no and you're branded homophobic.

I don't agree with Elton because he is putting potentially millions of people around the world under the same umbrella. He's generalising being very prejudiced by saying something like that. I or no-one else would get away with saying something similar about gay people so he shouldn't have for saying that about religion.

It's hypocrisy and double-standards that is actually destroying the world and causing hate between people.

Mav read the article. Mav thinks that organized religion can bring up the most loving of people and also the most hateful.

Mav would like to add Elton John also wants to see all organized religion banned, according to the article.

Fundamentally people are lemmings....whether it is in regard to religion, cults , politics etc. The majority of people follow the crowd and the people who think for themselves tend to be thought of as odd. Religious leaders of all faiths play on this, as do the spindoctors of politics. People should stop and think! Thought is the only way to see through those in charge, and make changes for the better.

It clearly says in the Bible that being gay is an abomination and that gays are proud to be gay and cannot enter The Kingdom of God because of this. Read about Sodam and Gomorrah in Genesis and you will see it for yourself. Do you think this might be why Elton John says these things? It is not the religions that are being hateful, but it is religions not wanting to go against what God says! Answer to question: DISAGREE

There are plenty religious people out there who can think for themselves, and who despise violence and war in the name of God or Allah. The problem is that, with the world in such a terrible state at the moment, people are easily brainwashed, and can be convinced to do terrible things in the names of their gods. I have no problem with peoples choice to believe in whatever god they choose, (I do not believe in any god or organised religion myself), however, I do think that fundamentalism in any religion is very dangerous. For example, in the USA fundamentalist Christians are fighting to have the teaching of evolution banned in schools and instead tell all the kids that god made the world in 7 days. This is very, very dangerous. People should have access to the truth, and be allowed to choose whether or not to follow religious beliefs, when they have the maturity and the knowledge to make informed choices. I believe it is wrong to indoctrinate people with religious beliefs, as this means that they can be manipulated in terrible ways, especially when their lives are so turbulent. Truth, peace, and freedom of choice would be better, but religion is used to control and manipulate people, and has been used to create war and hatred, and that is very sad.

I believe that lemmings follow the head lemming even if it is over a cliff to kill them selves, I believe that that is a good take on organized religion.
1)no room to evolve ideas to something better
2)their way or the highway
3)cults fashion them selves the same way

if you can't question the "truth" and be given a better answer than just believe and stop pestering us than it is not for me.
