a criminal conviction on a adult record can be "explunged" after enough time has passed and the person has proved they are staying out of trouble. But it will also be up to the judge.
He will make a petition in the court where the conviction happened to have it taken off the record.
Now for police background checks and national security checks it will still show up, but not for statndard employment

Yikes. I wonder if you would recommend your daughter or sister date a guy who commited arson - even if it was a long time ago. Good luck with that.
Oh, and of course -- we can't let him be a victim, you know. So more than likely, this nasty offense will disappear off his record one day.

Damn those police! Can't they see that he was just having a difficult time when he committed that crime? I don't understand why they just couldn't give him a break and not prosecute him. I'm glad you see how wonderful he truly is. It's not like he beats you three times a week, or something like that. I'm sure you can turn him around - all he needs is someone to understand him and love him and to see how great he truly is. I'm sure if you explain to the authorities how awesome he really is, that they'll take it off his record.

If he did it as a juvenile, it probably can be deleted. If he did it as an adult, I'm not sure.

You have to ask a judge to expunge it, I am not sure if they will expunge felonies, though.
