Istanbul is at the north-west of Turkey. You can check it with this map: http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/travel/dg/maps/7c/750x750_turkey_m.gif

It's a beautiful city to visit, and tourists are very welcome.

The city has had many names in history:

- Byzantium (ancient Greek city, founded by Greek colonists in the year 667 AD

- Augusta Antonina (named as such by the Roman emperor Septimius Severus in honour of his son Antonius, 3rd century AD)

- Nova Roma (New Rome, when Roman emperor Constantine the Great made the city the new eastern capital of the Roman Empire in the year 330 AD)

- Constantinople (the name by which the city became more widely known. It is first attested in official use under emperor Theodosius II, 408-450 AD).

Cheers.
