He might just have issues with the kitchen itself. My youngest cat is always really cautious and jumpy in the bathroom. If I make one move he jumps in the air and runs away. I know it's not me, it's just for some reason that I can't explain he's scared of the bathroom. Maybe it's the loud toilet. And maybe you're cat is scared of the kitchen b/c of the sink or the garbage disposal or something.
Do you feed him in the kitchen? Usually associations with tasty food will calm any fears he may have. If you do I guess just chalk it up to the fact that cats are wierd.

My kitty won't even come in the kitchen. My apartment set up is that I have a small swinging door that is part of a bar looking set up that leads into the kitchen and she will sit outside that door and wait for me to come out but if I open the door to invite her in while I'm doing dishes she backs away - I don't know what's going on in her head but keeps her off the counters lol

Is the kitchen all white and shiny and the living room not so glaring.
Maybe the cat is reacting to the white surface glare in the kitchen.
Maybe the cat is commenting on your interior decorations.

Cats are strange, my male cat likes to place in mattress with me and whilst my abdomen growls, he seems at my abdomen and runs like the wind, like a monster is popping out of my abdomen. I dont be attentive to why yet its humorous. Cats even have large eye web site and there could desire to be slightly malicious program or he could have a flea and a few circumstances my cats gets an itch or something and that they'll merely freak for no reason and then bypass take a seat on the floor and lick themselves.

It might not be "You" that your cat is afraid of in the Kitchen. There might be a presense in the kitchen that your kitty cat does not liked.
Just a thought.

Kitty may have chanced upon you in the kitchen using some noisy or scary gadget. So, to him, the formula,
YOU + KITCHEN = SCARY...
but YOU + LIVING RM = OK
