He really wants to stay friends, but I am still in love with him. Its hard for me to switch from lover to friend! He says he misses me and he asked me out for dinner after 3 months apart. We have been together for almost 4 years

In my humble opinion, you can not stay friends with someone you are in love with. You are not giving yourself the time you need to heal. I am friends with a lot of the guys I dated but not one was I in love with. It doesnt bother me when they talk about their current loves and it shouldn't. I wish them only the best and want them to be happy. As far as someone I am in love with, it isnt that I would wish any ill will, I just couldnt handle the heartbreak every day as once in my heart always in my heart.

Try to forget him and move on completely.
Know it's hard but not as hard as being a friend and watch him in love with another woman. Considering that he will obviously have some other girlfriend in future.

give yourself time to seperate your feelings for him. If you can be friends with him go for it. I'm still friends with my ex boyfriend of 4 years, I think it is great because they know you better hten anyone and so they can really help when you need someone, and you both know what you like to do so you can hang out. It will take time but your heart will change.

Its better to be friends but I would first get over the feelings for him before having a social meeting with your ex.That way you wont end up being bed buddies.
