Because if they grew on bushes they wouldn't have fallen off and hit Isaac Newton on the head, and we wouldn't have gravity so we'd all drift off into outer space.

It is just the way the plant has evolved. Apple trees have a lot of fruit so it makes sense to have the woody support of a tree rather than a vine or lightweight bush. The fruit is soft so it wouldn't survive if it developed underground like a potato.

they are seed pods so apples may reproduce
