Because he's divorced. Santa only comes once a year and Mrs. Claus got sick of it.

Because since he met Mrs. Claus, she has been baking so many cookies and he just can't resist them, therefore, gaining lots of weight. His ring no longer fits on his finger...it's sad.

he rides in a sleigh all night and his hands get cold, and he dose not want his ring to fall off.

Might catch on a chimney. :) Or, maybe his insurance company didnt cover it when he lost it "somewhere in the world" on one of his many trips. :)

he probably wears one under his gloves or has it on a a string around his neck.
but i'd go for under the gloves since you never see his hands.
