The word is the sword. People hate His words...that is evident even on this site. Even families will be divided because of His word.
This is why:
Heb 4:12 -
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

He could be alluding to the Crusades, where the Christians, supposedly in Christ's name, carried swords against the Moslems.
Muhammad the Final Messenger and Prophet brought peace among feuding tribal clans of Arabia. His hometown Mecca turned Islam after 23 years of his ministry, and the whole of Arabia was soon united not long after his demise.
Muslims today are yet to be united in this banner of peace. ISLAM, SALAM-- Surrender (to God and Muhammad), Peace.

Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
What he means by this is that he did not come to tell everyone that everything was okay... that they could quit their fighting because it was okay and acceptable to believe anything you want to believe.
But a sword to fight the battle against false teachers and false doctrines, for knowing the one true God and knowing his word.
God bless you :)

One interpretation is that mankind is in a prison of their own making. A true messenger of God comes not to make the prison conditions better, but to bring the key to freedom from this prison.
Jesus did not come to bring peace, but to give you the sword (key) to free you from this prison.
There are those who will "thumbs down" this interpretation, but that's all it is .. an interpretation for you to consider.

I dont recall the actual passage but he also says in that paragraph that hes out to put son against father and mother, brother against brother etc etc and what he means is..He should be the only one you have to turn to since He is the way of salvation, anyone else holds you back from being with him(in your own way)because anothers belief isnt what he wants he wants your belief in Him,personally and your attachments to other people are like possesions

Mathew 10:34-36 says "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW;
and A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD".
What Jesus was saying was that if you are truly going to commit your life to following Him, many times you will pay a price. Many times it will turn your friends against you and many times you will even lose your family. That's a price you have to be willing to pay if you want to follow Christ.

It means that many people will not understand his message and many will be offended as many will accept it. This will not result in peace, but rather diviision.
You see it today. When people speak the truth, many hate it. This all has to do with the war between good and evil.

(Eph 6:11) Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
(Eph 6:12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.......
........Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
He came to fulfill and teach the word of God and not peace....
(Mat 10:34) Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
(Mat 10:35) For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
(Mat 10:36) And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
(Mat 10:37) He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
(Mat 10:38) And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
(Mat 10:39) He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
(Mat 10:40) He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
(Mat 10:41) He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
(Mat 10:42) And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
His words are still true today! I know from personal experience. Sadly many that claim to be "Christian" are choked out by the cares of this world..
(Mar 4:18) And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word,
(Mar 4:19) And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
