It could be the dogs character or level of intelligence. My Kokomo knew that he was doing wrong as well, but he just didn't care (and our cat is JUST like he was). Kokomo would wait until we were busy talking on the phone, had company over, or were just in the other room and he'd sneak cat food. As soon as we caught him and said his name, he'd high-tail it out of the kitchen and lay down (he knew the command "Go to your room!"). Just stick with your training and your girl should eventually "get a clue." Some dogs just need more training and patience than others. Good Luck!

Hounds are generally not all that interested in pleasing you. She is not being stupid, she is just being a typical Hound. I currently have what is the naughtiest Hound I have ever had, but I also think she is probably the smartest. Trainability has nothing to do with intelligence. Which dog is smarter, the one who blindly follows every command or the one who would rather think for themself?
She may very well be naughty her whole life. Learn to laugh at it and appreciate the fact that she has her own agenda.
I love the naughty ones! They are the SMART ones!

Dogs do have different levels of intelligence the same as us. Your dog knows that you do not approve of what she does, but I suspect that shes like doing these things. Because she is boisterous she does the things she wants to do and the minute she has done it realises that you do not approve. It's in her nature and character so it is harder for her than your other dog. She will eventually train but it will be that much harder for you. I don't necessarily think that your boisterous dog is less smarter than the other one just more boisterous.

LMAO! The situation you are having with your hounds is remarkably similar to the situation my mom had raising my brother and myself !!
My brother was the calm, well-behaved child that did everything he was told to do, at the time he was told to do it, and exactly as he was told to do it. My brother never wanted to incur the wrath of our mom.
I was the one who did what I wanted, when I wanted and how I wanted. I couldn't have cared less about the wrath of our mom.
My mom was in a constant state of frustration because of me; it totally messed up her mind that she had two such different kids. I know she spent endless hours wondering where she was going wrong with me.
So along comes adult hood ... long, long story short: My brother ended up irresponsible, incapable of keeping a job, and a law-breaker. I, on the other hand, ended up a responsible citizen with a great career ... and someone my mom is very proud of.
Like me as a child, I think your boisterous hound is simply sowing her wild oats ... she'll simmer down with age, don't worry. As for her intelligence level : it takes smarts to swim against the tide and come out okay ... hey, I ought to know, I did it. ( LOL )
Meanwhile, unfortunately for you, the best advice I can offer is to do what my mom ended up doing: stock up on hair-dye to cover up all the grey hair your boisterous pup is giving you ... LOL.
Seriously, you sound like a very loving doggie mom and I wish you and your pet family happy, fun and healthy lives.

lol basset hounds are kind of like having a toddler....think terrible twos.
they will do what they want when they want. i had a wonderful basset as a child, very smart dog...BUT only did what she wanted to...didn't take to being ordered around much at all!
i don't think she's stupid at all...on the contrary i think she's a very ornery and stubborn smart girl that seems to have you right where she wants you! lol...you have a stinker on your hands. i know it's frustrating...but I'm sure she loves you dearly. *she's just bull headed*
mine sure was! ha ha.

only remeber hounds are bred to seek ! I even have in no way had a basset yet have experienced many fox hounds and in spite of you do they're born to place their nostril to the floor and hunt ! they get to approximately 6 months and thats it, they're off ! regardless of the undeniable fact that they are the main stunning cute canines so as long as you dont attempt to renounce them doing what nature meant x

of course dogs have different levels of intelligence just as humans do. By the way. Dogs have no concept of guilt. Your dog does NOT know "it has done something wrong". All it knows is that you are annoyed with it so it slinks about looking worried, ears and tail down etc. That isn't guilt, is is subservience and trying to appease you so that you won't be angry with it.

Yes indeed, it's possible! Intelligence and personality differ as widely in animals as they do in humans. What would be really unlikely is to have all members of a dog breed be alike.
P.S. Give both of those good dogs a treat for me!

I have a beagle/collie cross, who for the first few years with me acted like your bassett. Now he is middle aged and a perfect dog, I have to say, although life is much easier now, I do miss the naughty cheeky dog. Mind you, he still goes completely deaf when he is off the lead!

I think that just as some people are cleverer than others, some dogs of the same breed are more intelligent and others are less intelligent
