I make most of the shirts I own. I use acrylics, but I've found it works best when mixed with a fabric medium, and then ironed (heat treated) before it gets washed for the first time. that pretty much makes it permanent. you can get the fabric medium at pretty much any craft store. I got mine from michael's.

There are several different types of fabric paint. Found at your local arts and crafts supply store. Also, check into finding a local textile artist because sometimes they make and sell their own colours. That is what I did. It is cheaper to buy from an artist then from the arts store.

You could use acrylic paint on t-shirts but it does not work the same way that fabric paint does. Acrylic washes out and fades.

Acrylic paint, of course. After it dries (which is very quickly) it will hold up through a hundred washes.

Actually, acrylic paint DOES NOT wash out and fade (as BeBee claims). Acrylic paint is a petroleum by-product (much the way plastic is) and is used as permanent colors on professional sports jerseys. And acrylic paint has been used regularly by artists sense it first came on the market in the early 1950s.

The painters' smocks I wear to paint in have gone through dozens of washes and the paint I'm gotten on the clothes have not washed out or faded over time.

You have special paints made for cloth. I know them as fabric paints but i'm not sure the name they go by in the U.S. If you can't find those you cn alwas paint with dyes which is more technical

I used to work for a T-shirt screen printing in Hawaii. They used a water based paint and then heat treated it. Nazdar is one of the leaders in the screen printing business.
