i got my Ariel from Argos and it works fine in the loft. Just make sure you get one which offers high-gain as most roofs will attenuate the signal, even more when it is raining. Also make sure that you get good quality coax cable and connectors as these will also affect the signal quality.

the best answer is really to get an external Ariel.

Most set-top aerials (especially the loop type) won't pick up enough signal to receive freeview - the signal level is too low for most. What you really need is a new TV aerial that covers the entire band from channel 21 to 68. I've found that an aerial mounted in the loft works fine, and it's easier to install, but an outdoor one will give you an extra 1 to 2 dB signal. Argos 534/1829 will give you a good signal in most area, either outdoors or in the loft, unless you live in a particularly bad reception area.

Get a signal booster or a distribution kit if you need to feed more than 3 TV sets. Up to 3 you can usually get away with just using extension kits (each kit will split 1 aerial feed into 2 aerial feeds, so for 3 sets you would need 2 kits.) This works because most freeview boxes have an internal amplifier to boost the aerial signal.

Argos 534/6161 will boost the signal into 4 TV sets, or if you just want to go for the splitting kits, Argos 534/1087 or 534/2835. If you need to feed more than 4 sets Argos 534/6178 feeds 6, or you can use 2, 4-way boosters and 1 splitter kit to feed 8 and so on. There's probably a limit to how many you can feed this way but it's going to be more than most people would need.

Either way you will need to do some wiring inside your home, possibly including drilling holes through the walls and / or the ceiling.

I had the same problem.. what I did was to to install a seperate loft aerial for the tvs upstairs....If you are really ambitious run another point into your bedroom while your at it.If you run too many points off your main aerial you will got a loss in picture and the freeview box will have probs picking up the signal..Forget about buying boosters etc etc as they will need a power supply ..

to get freeview you will have to have a digi aerial.you can put one in the loft but it would be better on the roof.
off a digi aerial you should be able to run 2 or 3 tvs.
you can buy a video sender but the problem with that is you would not be able to change chanels up stairs.

you can buy digisender box from Argus or any electrical store for about £30 and that sends the signal to your children's room with no wires a lot easier
