believe me friend, you'll go (death) before the Vatican goes. Get over it! You know you want to be a Catholic. Mary...pray for us!

The Vatican is an independent state. Church members would do better to "abolish" Sierra Leone or Mexico, if they can "abolish" a country ( both of which, by the way, go against Biblical teachings).

I think you are mistaken.

+ The Pope +

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

+ Sources of Doctrine +

The Catholic Church does not use Holy Scripture as the only basis of doctrine. It could not. The early Catholic church existed before and during the time that the New Testament was written (by Catholics).

There were hundreds of Christian writings during the first and second centuries. Which New Testament writings would become official was not fully decided until about 400 AD.

Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit was guiding the early church (and is guiding the church today) to make the correct choices about things like:
+ The Holy Trinity (which is also only hinted at in the Bible)
+ Going to church on Sunday instead of Saturday (which is actually directly against one of the Ten Commandments)
+ The Communion of Saints
+ Which writings include in the New Testament?

Things that are even more modern like
+ Slavery is bad. Slavery is never declared evil in the Bible. This was one of the justifications for slavery in the Confederate States.
+ Democracy is good. The Bible states that either God should be the leader of the nation like Israel before the kings or kings should be the leader, "Give to Caesar that which is Caesar's." This was talked about a lot during the American Revolution.

This second source of doctrine, inspired by the Holy Spirit, is called Holy Tradition.

Hi, I am Rational Spirituality,

Catholics are the most rigid arm of Christianity who will never abolish anything, but God will. The Vatican will be dismantled during our lifetimes, bank on it, and remember I told you.

I think its sad Catholics are not encouraged to read the bible.....

Larry again, I am not to judge, same as any Christian.

But if it happens I would see the logic, lets say that.

You are breaking my heart tonight, I know so many Catholics who are wonderful gems!

Pray for them and for all my brother

Matthew 16 is clear in showing us that Jesus established the papacy, with Peter as its first occupant.

Other verses of the Bible speak of the apostles being granted the power to bind/loose on earth, and that it would also be bound/loosed in Heaven.

Jesus also says, somewhere in the Bible, that "he who listens to you, listens to me." He spoke these words to His apostles -- the first bishops, with Peter clearly appointed as their earthly "boss."

Peter is mentioned prominently among the apostles in the Gospels on numerous occasions. His name is almost always listed first on any list of apostles' names in the Gospels, and he figures in most of the most dramatic -- and meaningful -- scenes.

Finally, Peter's first letter in the New Testament includes greetings from the church in "Babylon" -- which Protestant and Catholic scholars alike overwhelmingly agree is "code language" for Rome.

In addition to that Scriptural evidence, there are loads of non-scriptural historical references to Peter being in Rome, heading up the Church there, and dying there.

Not Catholic here; but aren't you a bit confused.. It was the Catholics who decided what is scripture and what is not.. If they voted the New Testament in, then they could vote it out and you would not have a book to stand on. (pun intended)

How...? That's the reason Jesus gave Peter authority on earth so people don't go around mis-interpreting the bible and making a new sect each day...
