I purchased a car today from someone we thought "trustworthy". Now that we get home and get on the internet, we find him not so "trsutworthy". I am just wondering if I can take the car back legally on Monday, or if I am "screwed". We have signed paper work, but we have not done the loan yet as we were preapproved through our credit union which is closed today for Veterans Day. I need to know what the law states! HELP PLEASE!

There is NO right to return a car because you changed your mind.

I can not say this enough!!!

The 72 hours rule that everyone keeps talking about applies to in home sales. It does not apply when you go to a "normal place of business". It was designed to prevent people from being pressured into signing contracts just to get the salesman to leave their home. When you go to a place of business, you always have the option of walking out. You can not walk out of a sales situation in your own home.

When you take delivery of a vehicle, and drive it off the dealers lot, you own it!! The dealer is not required to take it back, and most likely will not. If he does, you will have to buy another vehicle from him, because he is not going to refund your money.

In the future, have any car checked by your own mechanic prior to purchase, and do any other research that you need to do before signing purchase papers and taking delivery!!!

There is NO three-day rescission law that applies to motor vehicle purchases. You do NOT have a right to return the vehicle because you regret purchasing the vehicle or have decided it doesn't meet your needs or you cannot afford it. Once you purchase the vehicle you assume responsibility for it. Some automobile sellers may have policies that allow you to return the vehicle within a certain number of days, but usually you may return the vehicle only for credit towards the purchase of a different vehicle. Please note that this is a policy set by the seller and is NOT required by law.

If you feel that a seller misrepresented the vehicle or has violated motor vehicle dealer requirements, please contact the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division of the Utah Tax Commission for assistance.
The Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division (MVED) of the Utah State Tax Commission licenses and regulates automobile dealerships, salespeople, crushers, transporters, dismantlers and body shops. It investigates motor vehicle fraud and other crimes, such as auto theft, chop shops, odometer fraud and salvage vehicle fraud.

All I can say is good luck. If nothing is wrong with the car, then I'm not sure how much help you can get if the guy is just a jerkoff and has ripped other people off.
