There have been many scientific and medical studies of the effects of meditation. Mantras, chanting, etc. are a way to achieve a variety of goals in meditative practice which is used in both secular and religious contexts.

When it comes to using meditation to affect human physiology, it has been proven repeatedly to have measurable effects. For millenia meditation has been used to bring about positive lifestyle and physical enhancement. Ritual practice, meditiaiton, etc. do not always have to equate to "magic" or transcendental religious experience. But religion has found meditation to be an excellent tool to enhance the overall "religious experience."

The link(s) below provide a small sampling of the physiological effects of meditation. In it are listed a number of good studies performed under stringent scientific protocols, along with articles on the serious intrest the scientific community has in meditation.

The subject is a fascinating one that most people with just a little work can rather easily engage on a personal and tangible level.

Unfortunately, the ignorance of the original Science of the Vedic Hindus was lost to the World and whatever was saved by Vyasa and his colleagues left a lot of lost links in between.

I shall not take up a lot of space in detailing the facts, which you may please research on your own; but let me enlighten you that it is very common in Vedic Hindu calculations to have results that are accurate up to sixteen decimal points!?

Please read "mantra" as "formula" and "yantra" as "machine".
Also please look up the Science of Sonics to start appreciating the subject of "chants and sound".

Do have a nice day.

Oh, I'm sorry, there are ample "Scientific Evidence" of the fact that they work. Please do your own research, though.

I doubt it. I read a scientific study once that showed evidence that praying for sick people tends to make them worse rather than better, but I don't know about chants, etc.
