It depends on how you view it, as the Christians slaughtered the Muslims during the Crusades.

The Crusades were a series of military campaigns conducted in the name of Christendom and usually sanctioned by the Pope. They were military campaigns of a religious character typically characterized as being waged against pagans, heretics, Muslims or those under the ban of excommunication. When originally conceived, the aim was to recapture Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the Muslims while supporting the Byzantine Empire against the "ghazwat" of the Seljuq expansion into Anatolia. The fourth crusade however was diverted and resulted in the conquest of Constantinople. Later crusades were launched against various targets outside of the Levant for a mixture of religious, economic, and political reasons, such as the Albigensian Crusade, the Aragonese Crusade, and the Northern Crusades.

Very few people understand the hateful grudges the Sultan of Turkey was capable of. This is one example that I know of: The Sultan ordered a campaign into the Ukraine, to capture boys under the age of 5. Once these boys were captured, they were raised as Muslims, (killed if they refused), and sent against the Ukrainians twenty years later as a form of psychological terrorism. They figured that the people would not want to kill their own brothers. Pretty devious, eh? And a long grudge. They did not want to stop the war, but keep it going.

I don't think the Europeans ever stooped to that.

Religions do not 'own' international locations. people can % for themselves what they decide to be, and there is not any Christian empire that should be reclaimed or relinquished.

That is one theory, or one viewpoint on the Crusades, but please don't take that to be the only or accurate one. There are always multiple reasons for waging war and "self-defense" is frankly the easiest way to garner recruits. (e.g. Let's fight the terrorists that hate us over there instead of over here.)

IMHO, History is not clear who provoked the 1st war between Catholics and Muslims.

But, having said that: consider this: 'Did Jesus and his early disciples used the sword to avenge the cruelty they experienced at the hand of their oppressors?'

... Correct, however the crusades were furthered as an onslaught and overkill. And the mercenaries of the church were not there to defend, even if that was the political reason, no, the mercenaries were still there to rape muslim women.
