I live in California and I'm wondering where they are sold and approximately how much they cost. Also is it okay to buy just one? or are they better in pairs?

Check for a breeder in the back of the Bird Talk magazine for a local breeder near you. Since you are in California, check out your local paper for bird marts in your area. You should be able to find a breeder near you.

Most pet-shops don't carry them. There's one big lory breeder in California, Dick Schroeder (Cuttlebone plus). Or you can go to lorikeets.com and look at the for sale ads.
Lorikeets need a lot of attention. I like to keep mine in pairs. But then they will be less bonded to you.

what sort of lorikeet?

I get flocks of wild ones in the trees around my house, both Rainbow and Scaley breasted lorikeets.

They sell them for aboy $80 a pair, but this is in Australia.

Considering they are members of the San Diego Wildlife Park, they may not be accessible to own as pets. You can always ask local petstores, they may know more about it.

I've never seen them at pet shops either. They may be a breed that the public can't buy.
