I have had many different breeds of dog. All of them had exceptional intelligence. I have owned-Black Lab, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Beagle, Pit Bull, and a Jack Russell Terrier. There are so many different breeds of dogs out there, I haven't even seen them all. I also worked at a pet store, dealing with at least 40 different breeds of dog. In my experience with owning, working with dogs, I would have to say the smartest dog is a really tough one to pick. It all depends on what you consider smart...A dog that can be taught tricks? A dog that obeys complex commands? Or a dog that is able to figure out things on its own(open doors, drawers, etc.) If you think its a feat performing dog, I would say Jack Russell Terrier. A dog that obeys complex commands? German Shepherd. A dog that can figure out how to do laundry? Labrador Retriever. In my opinion, I have seen more intelligent Labs than any other dog. And they are generally well behaved dogs that are great with kids. To me, it takes a very smart dog to understand that kids are precious. That's something that really can't be taught.

We have 3 dogs, a border collie, a lab and a pomeranian. The border collie was abused before we got her so she's a total wimp. The pom's still a pup but very sweet. Our lab is highly intelligent and very loyal. She has always "babysat" my kids; if they go outside she goes too, and has a special bark when strangers are around. She went with my daughter when she was 3 and wandered off our property; the neighbor informed us that Tilly wouldn't let anyone get near my daughter until we came to get them. She knows what "walk" means, as in going for a walk. She knows us all by name. I could go on. So I would say a lab!

I believe the smartest dog is the Jack Russell Terrier, they are so smart they can out wit their owner although a very stubborn dog, it is amazing the things these dog can do. They do take a very determined strong minded human who knows how to be the alpha, or they will walk all over you.

In my opinion I think all the small dogs like poodles, small terriers are the smartest. I feel this way because I have 4 dogs and 2 of them are small, terrier and poodle. They know how to get my attention, they love to be held and act like children. I really believe that they do think they are babies. In fact one is in my lap as we speak and everywhere I go she is there. This one literally cries when I am out of her sight or when I leave home for awhile. Sometimes I feel guilty about leaving her, she sounds like a baby. Now I do know which dogs are considered smarter, but it is my opinion that small dogs rule. Even my big dogs let the small ones have their way.

German Shepard first
Poodle second

Why do they use German Shepards in law enforcement? They are smart and know how to read their master. On command they can do their job. They are extrememly sharp. But they need good training as they are a big breed and they need great discipline.

The poodle on the other hand is a master pleaser. Loves attention and is smart as a whip. They are affectionate and sharp.
Why do you thing they use these dogs in magic shows and circus acts? They are smart and just want to please you.

Border Collies.. I used to work at an animal shelter and these dogs are definately very intelligent.. sadly that is why so many of them end up in shelters - becuase people get them as cute pups and fail to meet their high mental needs.. causing the dog to become destructive and then they dump the dog...
they are so intelligent they way they look at you for approval, I have honestly never seen another dog look at a person they way I have seen many BC's look at a person for approval..
even their submissive urination is a sign of intelligence (oddly enough)

He understands what I say to him. How I feel. Everything. People say
"pit bulls" are bad. I say he is the best. I love him more than anything.
