But if you pray for the benefit of others, you see it fulfilled, more often than not. Why is that? Is that the way God is teaching us to be selfless?

God says to pray for the needs of others and also for your own needs. God does not discriminate. He may answer your prayers by saying NO or Wait or it's not my will. He make me answering you by just little things EVERY DAY that you don't realize is an answer to it. God NEVER promised that we would get what we want..only what we need. Only he can the future. I am not sure what you are praying for but say for instance you were praying for a new house..and you got that house.. Years down the line you can't pay for that house and it gets repossessed and your homeless.. God knows you can't afford a new house but sometimes he will give you your wish knowing that later in life you will realize he knew what he was doing. I use to feel the same way.."why is this person's life getting better and their prayers are being answered and mine aren't." (especially with the illness issue. ) I and my friends have prayed for years for healing for me...I want instant healing but God is doing daily healing for me and I believe what day I will be healed..EVERYTHING takes place in GOD'S TIME

Yes, we are not really suppose to focus on our needs but we are suppose to focus and pray for the needs of others. God already knows our needs and when He sees us praying, helping, giving to others we are more likely to see more of our prayers answered, and it keeps us from being selfish and living in the flesh. But God is a good God and He has answered alot of my prayers and He did it when I thought I least deserved it.

Depends on the prayer. Jesus himself instructed us to pray for yourselves by asking for our daily bread (that is to have our own needs meet), to be forgiven of our sins, and to not be lead into temptation. So there are some times that Christians should be praying for themselves.
But it is not until after they have prayed for God's Kingdom to come and His Will to be done. That most often manifest in serve to others, rather than to self. So that could be considered "praying for others". But nowhere in Jesus' model prayer are we specifically told to pray for others. (Although there are LOTS of others scriptures saying to do it.)
So they idea of ONLY prayers for others being answers is difficult to defend with the Bible.

No, ALLAN. I get what I pray for. It might not be my timing, but God answers ALL MY PRAYERS. --even the ones I'm STILL
waiting on--I KNOW MY GOD.
He promises over and over to answer prayers of a righteous man.

I get answers to prayer for myself all the time, sometimes almost instantly, but usually within a day or two.

lol, your overly generalizing. I know plenty of people who pray for world peace yet it doesn't happen. You can assume that everyone has the same experience as you.
