Actually, COPD is not a disease in and of itself. Its a category that includes two diseases: Emphysema and chronic bronchitis. If you have emphysema, doctors will also say you have COPD. If you have chronic bronchitis, doctors will also say you have COPD. They're both lumped into this category because even though they're both different illnesses/diseases, the essentially do the same thing, which the name COPD stands for-Chronic (meaning life-long) Obstructive Pulmonary (Disease that obstructs/blocks your pulmonary/airway/lungs) Disease. Both usually come from smoking and can lead to other serious complications in the lungs. With chronic bronchitis, you have to take steroids and bronchodilators just like you would have to with asthma, and both diseases cause you to not be able to take in oxygen properly, which can end up also affecting other parts of your body. Check it out on webmd.com.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It involves the lungs. Smokers tend to get it from years of abuse to the lung tissues. Your lungs just give out, can't transfer oxygen like they used to, build up fluids, etc. It's a scary way to die.
