Will kitty litter clog the toilet?

I use Special Kitty litter and since I live in a dorm (and technically not supposed to have a cat) I flush the "solid" matter down the toilet. Not the whole box of litter just what needs to be taken out at the time. I've been doing it for about 3 weeks and it doesn't appear to be a problem... please only serious answers.

I should mention the reason I stated that it was Special Kitty is because its not the best brand and doesn't clump easy... its the cheap stuff

Hi Sara...any clay litter will clog the plumbing over time. The school toilets probably are powerflush models, but somewhere down the sewage line the litter will slowly solidify and cause clogging.

All of these are flushable and will not clog nor harm the plumbing.

Use a plunger and plunge the kitty litter out of the toilet don't flush it down when it comes up you'll have to get a disposable cup and scoop it out. If the toilet is still clogged get some "Liquid Plumber" it's a gel that dissolves dirt, hair and gunk that gets stuck inside drains. Hope this helps. Also never flush kitty litter again.

I wouldn't suggest flushing kitty litter down the toilet. Notice that when the cat pee's the litter expands to soak up the liquid. It could get caught in your pipes and jam there. I'm sure you wouldn't want to mess up the dorm pipes and make life hard for everyone else. It's bad enough that most of those girls are probably already flushing stuff down the toilet that shouldn't go there (hygeine items, etc.) and all the hair that probably goes down the shower drain. Just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't take a risk with kitty litter.

Cat litter will eventually clog a toilet or pipes. Litter is made of dried clay and if you add enough liquid it will become the consistency of clay near a creek or river. The best thing to do is keep plastic grocery bags and scoop out the litter everyday or twice a day and just tie the bag up and place it in your regular trash. If you absolutely have to flush the litter, there is a new brand of flushable litter available. It is a little more expensive than traditional scoopable litter...or perhaps a litter caddy is a good idea for you. Look it up online or check your local pet store for it.

I'm not familiar with the brand that you are using. If it is a clumping litter ( urine spots aren't just darker, they are actually a clump ), putting the litter down the toilet will damage the pipes. If it's a clay type litter, there shouldn't be any problems.

An easier solution is to get a stash of plastic grocery bags and put the soiled solid matter in their and throw it out with the trash.

It depends on the litter. I use Feline Pine (which I highly recommend - it helps with the smell alot, and no gross huge clumps because its not like regular litter). You can find it at any store, like Walmart or Petco. I always flush my cat's poop down the toilet, because the litter I use doesn't make it clump up in a huge ball, basically her poop just stays on top, because the litter looks like huge pellets and doesnt clump up with the litter. As long as you don't have a huge ball of poop and litter, it should be fine. Plus, dorm bathrooms are pretty powerful (i go to college, now live off campus), they can handle jsut about anything.

A good alternative to flushing is to get a 1 gallon ice cream pail, minus the ice cream :~), and scoop the poop in there. As long as the cover has a tight seal you will never smell a thing, and it will probably only need to be taken out 1 or 2 times a month. I clogged a toilet by doing the same thing you are, so be careful.

Do not flush kitty litter! My daughter moved into an apartment where the
previous tenant flushed kitty litter. It clogged the drain and the whole
toilet had to be replaced. It is such a bad idea. Just bag it and put it
out with the trash.

You should be fine as long as you only flush the "solid" matter down the toilet. Don't try to flush too much of the litter down the toilet though. I did this once and it clogged my toilet up big time. It took me forever to get the toilet unclogged. As long as you stick to the "solid" matter only, you should be fine.
